I haven't done anything like that in years. The job where I made those video tutorials was in the late 90s. All I can say is that, whatever you do, do NOT use Screencam! The first three months I was on the job, the boss insisted that we use it to make the tutorials, and then would blame the glitches that happened because Screencam was a lousy, bug-ridden piece of software on me. I finally made him try it out for himself, and it did to him what it'd been doing to me. THEN he finally listened to me. The solution he finally settled on, which I thought workable but the least optimal, was a Powerpoint presentation for the web, with a link to the stand-alone Powerpoint reader.

Since I left that job, I haven't kept up with what's available to do video screencapture. Sorry I don't have a good experience with something, so I could recommend it to you.

I shall endeavour to get something up, then. I need a good PC-based tool to make them... maybe Camtasia?

Things like that screencast are indeed a great way to show new members how the place works. One of the various hats I've worn during my checkered career was technical writer. I produced a series of visual tutorials teaching how to use the main product of a small, home-based startup. The number of orders for the product shot right up after those 5 to 8 minute tutorials went live. It's a great idea to have one for Protagonize. :)

Apparently, it does for me. Also, I think we recorded the screencast after doing the 20 minute podcast so my voice was already pretty shot.

I may have to re-record a screencast just as an introduction to the site for new users. Now that I've seen it, I think it could definitely be a valuable visual way of describing how the site works. Just needs to be cleaned up a bit. :)

So 3 or 4 beers acts as a mute button? I'll have to try that on my loudmouth cat that generally howls at three or four in the morning. ;)
